A like-for-like swap is the cheapest job. A new installation, where no water line, drain or outlet exists yet, adds trades and time.

What changes the price
- Replacement or new installation. Swapping a dishwasher into the same opening, with the water, drain and power in place, is the simple case.
- Plumbing. A new shut-off valve, supply line or drain connection is plumbing work. HomeStars lists a new water supply valve at $50 to $100.
- Electrical. GE Appliances calls for an individual, properly grounded 120 V circuit with a 15 or 20 amp breaker. If you do not have that, you need a licensed electrician.
- The cabinet opening. A different size, a raised floor or a countertop that blocks the brackets can add work.
- Drain setup. The drain hose needs a high loop or an air gap so dirty sink water cannot flow back. Some codes require an air gap, so check yours.
- Old appliance removal. Taking away the old unit may be a separate charge, depending on who does the job.
- Getting the dishwasher to your home. Delivery and pickup are separate unless you arrange them with the store.

Where to get a dishwasher installed
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| The store that sold it | One booking for delivery and install | Home Depot Canada says it installs only appliances purchased there, and haul-away of the old unit is an extra fee |
| An appliance installer | A standard swap on a day you choose | Check what is included, including hoses and kits |
| A licensed plumber or electrician | New water lines, drains or circuits | Usually priced by the hour and the job |
| DIY | A simple swap with the hookups already there | A loose fitting can cause a slow leak under the cabinets |

Questions to ask before you book
- Is the price for a swap, and what happens if the hookups need work?

- Is the old dishwasher removed, and is there a fee?
- Will the installer secure the unit to the counter or the cabinet sides?
- Will they run a test cycle and check for leaks before they leave?
- When do you pay?

Frequently asked questions
How much does dishwasher installation cost in Canada?
HomeStars lists basic replacement labour at $150 to $300 and new-install labour at $300 to $600. Pixl Canada charges $180 before tax for a standard install, including a new water inlet hose.
Does the price include the dishwasher?
No. Installation prices cover labour and the listed parts. The dishwasher is bought separately.
Do I need a plumber to install a dishwasher?
Not for a straight replacement where the shut-off valve, drain and power are already in place. New water or drain lines are plumbing work and need a licensed plumber.
Do I need an electrician?
Only if there is no suitable outlet or circuit. GE calls for an individual, grounded 120 V circuit with a 15 or 20 amp breaker.
Can the store that sold me the dishwasher install it?
Often, but check the terms. Home Depot Canada, for example, says it installs only appliances bought there, and haul-away of the old unit costs extra.
How long does installation take?
A like-for-like swap is usually a short visit. New plumbing or electrical work takes longer, so ask when you book.
