What the numbers in 5.1.2 mean

Dolby explains the three numbers in a layout name on its Dolby Atmos speaker setup page. The first number is the ear-level speakers (left, right, centre and surrounds), the second is the subwoofer and the third is the height or overhead speakers.

Dolby says height speakers are either installed in the ceiling to fire downward or are upward-firing speakers that bounce sound off the ceiling toward the listening position. Main speakers should be about ear level when you are seated, roughly 3.9 feet from the floor.

What can add to the cost

  • Mounting the TV. A TV mount and labour are priced separately. See TV mounting prices by city.
  • Hiding wires. Wires hidden in an existing channel are $25, in a raceway $60 and inside the wall $99.50.
  • A soundbar. Installing a soundbar is $50, and mounting it is a further $50.
  • Harder walls. Concrete, brick and plaster add to the labour. See how to mount a TV on brick or concrete.
  • Equipment. Speakers, a receiver, cables and a subwoofer are bought separately.

How to plan a layout you will not regret

  1. Pick the seating spot first. Everything is measured from where you sit.
  2. Choose the layout for your room size. A small room often suits 5.1 or 5.1.2. Large rooms can use 7.1.2.
  3. Check your ceiling. Ceiling height and material matter for height speakers, so confirm the manufacturer’s guidance before you buy.
  4. Plan the wire runs. Decide where the receiver goes and how the cables reach each speaker.
  5. Buy matching speakers for the front three so the sound moves smoothly across the screen.
  6. Calibrate. A good setup needs level matching and distance settings, whatever the equipment costs.

Soundbar or surround system?

A soundbar is simpler, costs less to install and fits rooms where running speaker wire is hard. A surround system gives real directional sound and handles larger rooms better. If you are weighing both, read how to connect a soundbar to a TV and our custom home theatre page.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Which layout fits my room and seating?
  2. Where will the receiver and the subwoofer go?
  3. How will each speaker cable be routed, and is the wall finished?
  4. Will the TV be mounted at the same visit, and where will its wires go?
  5. What equipment do I need to buy before the install date?
