Range Hood Installation Cost in Canada (2026)

Quick answer

With Pixl Canada, an under-cabinet range hood (30 to 36 inches) costs $140 to install, a chimney range hood costs $170 and a new exhaust duct adds $50, all before tax. The cost rises when a job needs a new duct run through a wall or roof, a new outlet or cabinet changes. The hood is bought separately, and you pay after the job.

Chimney hood with a new duct$170$50$220

The hood is not included, and neither are new wiring, a roof penetration or cabinet changes. Our range hood CFM and installation guide covers the sizing and the steps.

What changes the cost

  1. Hood style. A chimney hood has a cover to fit and is priced higher than an under-cabinet hood. Broan-NuTone’s range hood style guide notes that under-cabinet hoods typically sit 20 to 24 inches above the cooktop and chimney hoods 24 to 30 inches.
  2. The duct. Reusing a clean, correctly sized duct is the cheapest job. A new duct is $50 with Pixl, and a long or complex run takes more time. Keep the run short, with few elbows, because every bend cuts airflow.
  3. Wall or roof. Venting through an exterior wall is usually simpler. Venting through the ceiling and roof means cutting through the roof and flashing it properly, which is a bigger job.
  4. Power. A hood that plugs in or connects to an existing supply is simple. A new outlet or circuit is electrical work for a licensed electrician.
  5. Cabinets. A different width or a cabinet that needs trimming adds work.
  6. Make-up air. Health Canada’s ventilation report explains that large exhaust fans can depressurize a home, and that fans of roughly 200 to 400 CFM and up need a way to supply make-up air. Rules vary by province and municipality, so check with your building department before you buy a powerful hood.

Ducted or ductless: how it affects the price

A ducted hood sends air outside and needs a duct. A ductless (recirculating) hood passes air through grease and charcoal filters and returns it to the room, so no duct is needed. The Home Ventilating Institute recommends hoods that vent directly outside and notes that recirculating hoods do not actually ventilate. Ductless is easier to install where you cannot run a duct, such as some condos, but it leaves moisture and heat in the room and the charcoal filters need regular replacement. Questions to ask before you book

  1. Does the price include connecting to an existing duct, and what does a new duct cost?
  2. Where does the duct exit, and does the outside cap have a damper?
  3. Is power already at the hood location, or does it need a new outlet?
  4. Does the hood need make-up air in your home?
  5. What is the mounting height for my hood and cooktop, according to the manual?
  6. When do I pay?
