What changes the cost

  1. Swap or first install. Replacing an old over-the-range microwave in the same spot is the simple job. Replacing a range hood usually means a new outlet and a changed venting setup.
  2. The outlet. The outlet goes inside the cabinet above the microwave, and GE Appliances notes that the cord comes out of the top of the unit on the right side. If there is no outlet there, one must be added. Running a brand-new circuit from the panel is work for a licensed electrician.
  3. The venting setup. Most models can exhaust outside or recirculate air through a filter. Outside venting through the top or the back needs a duct, and a recirculating setup needs no duct but does not remove moisture or heat.
  4. The wall and cabinet. The mounting plate must be fixed into at least one stud, and the upper cabinet needs the right depth. GE lists a cabinet opening 30 inches wide, a cabinet depth of 12 to 13 inches and a mounting height of at least 66 inches to the top of the microwave.
  5. The range below. GE says its over-the-range microwaves should not go above a gas range or cooktop rated over 60,000 BTU combined, and notes minimum clearance to the cooktop.
  6. Weight and access. The unit is heavy and needs two people to lift and bolt, which is part of why installers charge for the job.

Check your model’s manual for its own numbers. See GE’s over-the-range microwave installation guidance.
