How to Install an Over-the-Range Microwave (and What It Costs)

By the Pixl Canada install team

An over-the-range microwave installed beneath upper cabinets.

Quick answer

To install an over-the-range microwave, you fix a mounting plate to the wall (into at least one stud), drill holes in the upper cabinet for the top bolts and power cord, hang the microwave on the plate with a helper, then bolt it up through the cabinet. It needs an outlet in the cabinet above and a venting setup.

How does an over-the-range microwave attach?

It hangs from two points: a metal mounting plate on the wall and bolts that go down through the bottom of the upper cabinet into the top of the microwave. The plate carries the back edge and the bolts hold the front.

According to GE Appliances’ over-the-range microwave replacement guide, each microwave ships with a mounting bracket, screws, an exhaust adapter, top and rear templates and installation instructions. The installation instructions have you fasten the plate into at least one wall stud. Where a hole does not land on a stud, installers use the toggle bolts supplied with the unit.

What do you need before you start?

You need the right size opening, a sturdy upper cabinet, a wall stud behind the plate and an outlet in the cabinet above. Check all of these before the old unit comes down.

Your tool list is short: a drill, bits, a stud finder, a level, a tape measure, a screwdriver and a helper. Most people forget the last one until the microwave is halfway up.

How high should an over-the-range microwave be above the stove?

Follow your manufacturer’s numbers. GE Appliances says its over-the-range microwaves need a minimum 66-inch mounting height from the floor to the top of the unit, which leaves roughly 13 inches between the cooktop and the bottom front of the microwave.

GE’s list of minimum air clearance requirements adds two more points. It notes that 30 inches of clearance is required between the cooktop and the bottom of an unprotected wood or metal cabinet, and that these microwaves should not go above a gas range or cooktop rated over 60,000 BTU combined (not counting the oven or broiler). Other brands use similar but not identical numbers, so always read the manual for your exact model.

Do over-the-range microwaves stick out from cabinets?

Usually yes, a little. Over-the-range microwaves are deeper than the standard 12 to 13 inch upper cabinet, so the front and door stick out past the cabinet face.

That is normal and by design, since the unit has to cover the front burners to catch steam. What you should check is that the door can open fully without hitting a side cabinet, wall or range hood trim.

Does an over-the-range microwave need to be vented?

It needs a venting setup, but not necessarily a duct to the outside. Most models can be installed to exhaust outside or to recirculate air through a filter back into the kitchen.

  • Outside, through the top: air goes up through the cabinet and out a roof or wall duct. This is the most common setup when replacing an old range hood.
  • Outside, through the back: air goes straight through the wall behind the microwave.
  • Recirculating: air passes through a charcoal filter and returns to the room. No duct needed, but it does not remove moisture or heat.

Outside venting clears steam, smoke and cooking smells better. Recirculating is the fallback when there is no practical path to the outside. Either way, the blower must be set up for your chosen option before the unit goes on the wall, following your model’s instructions.

Where does the outlet go for an over-the-range microwave?

The outlet goes inside the cabinet above the microwave, not behind it. GE Appliances notes on power cord location that the cord comes out of the top of the microwave on the right side, facing the front, so it passes up through a hole in the cabinet floor.

If you are replacing a range hood, there is usually no outlet in that cabinet. Many manufacturers call for a grounded outlet on its own circuit, so check your installation manual. Adding a receptacle where a circuit already runs is a small job; running a brand-new circuit from the panel is work for a licensed electrician.

Common installation mistakes

The biggest mistakes are missing the stud, mounting the plate out of level and forgetting to set up the blower for the venting option you want.

  • No stud behind the plate. Drywall alone will not hold the weight over time.
  • A crooked plate. If the plate is not level, the microwave will not line up with the top bolts.
  • Wrong blower setup. Switching between recirculating and outside venting often means changing the blower direction first.
  • Pinched power cord. Feed the cord through the cabinet hole before you lift the unit into place.
  • Lifting alone. One person should hold the microwave while the other starts the top bolts.

How much does over-the-range microwave installation cost?

At Pixl Canada, over-the-range microwave installation costs $160 before tax. Adding a new outlet is $60 and a new exhaust duct is $60.

ServicePixl price (CAD, before tax)
Over-the-range microwave installation$160
New outlet$60
New exhaust duct$60
Built-in microwave installation (for comparison)$120

A straight swap is $160. Replacing a range hood where you need both an outlet and a duct comes to $280. If the job needs a brand-new circuit from the panel, a licensed electrician should handle that part. You pay after the job, by card, e-transfer or cash.

Can I install an over-the-range microwave myself, or hire a pro?

Yes, if you are handy, have a helper and already have an outlet in the cabinet above the range. Replacing an old over-the-range unit with a similar model is the easiest case, because the outlet and often the vent are already there.

It gets harder when you need to add an outlet, run a new exhaust duct or fit the microwave into a space that does not match the size requirements. Adding a new circuit is electrical work, so hire a licensed electrician for that part and check with your local electrical authority about permits.

DIY pros:

  • Saves the labour cost.
  • Templates and hardware come in the box.

DIY cons:

  • It is a heavy, awkward two-person lift over a stovetop.
  • Drilling cabinets and finding studs leaves little room for error.
  • Adding an outlet or a new circuit is electrical work.

The back hangs on a mounting plate screwed to the wall, into at least one stud. Bolts then go down through the upper cabinet into the top of the microwave to hold the front.

It must be set up to vent either outside or in recirculating mode. Outside venting removes moisture and smells better, while recirculating uses a charcoal filter and needs no duct.
