Local know-how

TV mounting for every kind of Thunder Bay home

Thunder Bay is mostly detached houses: early 1900s homes in the old Port Arthur and Fort William cores, post-war and 1960s to 80s homes in Current River and Northwood, and a lot of finished basements.

Older Port Arthur and Fort William

Homes near the old downtowns of Port Arthur and Fort William, and in Westfort, often date to the early 1900s with plaster and lath walls. We use plaster anchors (+$10), and masonry anchors for brick (+$80).

Post-war neighbourhoods

Current River's post-war homes and the houses of Northwood are mostly drywall over wood studs. That's our standard install, from $200 for TVs from 32 to 60 inches.

Finished basements

In Jumbo Gardens, Parkdale and across the city, the TV room is often a finished basement. Drywall over wood studs is a standard install, and mounting on a concrete foundation wall adds $50.

Newer homes and rural properties

Newer homes in County Park, plus rural houses in Shuniah and Oliver Paipoonge, often have a gas fireplace or a wood stove with a stone surround. Above a fireplace adds $20, and stone adds $50.

What TV mounting includes

Every job covers the same essentials: we find the studs or anchor into masonry, level the mount at the height you choose, hang the TV, check that it is secure and clean up. You choose the extras.

Choosing a mount

Fixed, tilting or full-motion?

A fixed mount ($70) keeps the TV flat on the wall at eye level. A tilting mount ($80) angles the screen down, which helps above a fireplace. A full-motion mount ($125) swings and extends for corners and open-concept rooms. You can also use a mount you already have.

Clean look

Hiding the TV wires

We hide TV wires three ways: through an existing channel for $25, in a paintable raceway for $60, or inside the wall for $99.50 with a fire-resistant HDMI cable. Power cords should not run loose inside a wall, so in-wall jobs use rated cables and hardware.

TV mounting in Thunder Bay: questions

Labour for mounting a TV in Thunder Bay starts at $149.99 for screens up to 31 inches, $199.99 for 32 to 60 inches and $209.99 for 61 to 79 inches, before tax. Our mounts add $70, $80 or $125. A 55-inch TV with a tilting mount and wires inside the wall is about $379.49.

For most TVs over 40 inches, yes. We find the studs or the right anchors for plaster, concrete, brick and stone, level the mount, and can hide the wires, so the TV stays up and looks clean. About half of the people who ask us for a quote already own a mount, and we install it for labour only.

A 65-inch TV falls in the 61 to 79 inch group, so labour is $209.99 with your own mount. With our tilting mount it is $289.99, and with wires hidden inside the wall it is $389.49. Add $20 if it goes above a fireplace.

Store prices and what they include change, so check their current price. Ours is on this page: labour from $150, and the quote form shows your exact price before you book. We mount on plaster, concrete, brick and stone, we can hide the wires, and you pay after the job.

Yes. It adds $20. Thunder Bay homes have everything from gas inserts to brick wood-burning fireplaces, so we check the clearances first. Brick adds $80 and stone $50, and a tilting mount ($80) or pull-down mantel mount ($70, or $110 motorized) keeps the screen at a comfortable angle.

Yes. Most rentals and basement suites are drywall over wood studs, a standard install. A concrete foundation wall adds $50. If you rent, get your landlord’s permission before we drill. A full-motion mount ($125) helps in a small room where the TV needs to turn.

No. Plaster and lath is common in Westfort and the older parts of Port Arthur and Fort William. We locate the framing behind the plaster before drilling and use anchors made for it so it does not crack. Plaster adds $10, and brick adds $80.

A good rule is to have the centre of the screen near eye level when you are seated, about 42 inches from the floor in most living rooms. Above a fireplace it sits higher, so a tilting or pull-down mount makes a real difference. Our guide on how high to mount a TV has a chart by screen size.

Yes, in three ways: through an existing channel for $25, in a paintable raceway on the wall for $60, or fully inside the wall for $99.50, which includes a fire-resistant HDMI cable and hardware.
