Appliance Installation in Canada: The Complete 2026 Guide
By the Pixl Canada install team

Quick answer
Most home appliances can be swapped like for like when the water, drain, power and vent are already in place. With Pixl Canada, dishwasher installation is $180, a side-by-side washer and dryer is $110 and a stacked pair is $150, an under-cabinet range hood is $140 and an over-the-range microwave is $160, all before tax. New gas lines, circuits, water lines or drains are jobs for licensed trades, so check your hookups before delivery day.

Which jobs need a licensed trade
A swap that reuses existing connections is a standard appliance job. Work beyond that belongs to a licensed trade.

| Work | Who does it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New water supply or drain line | Licensed plumber | Plumbing code, and the risk of a hidden leak |
| New circuit or a new outlet on a new circuit | Licensed electrician | GE calls for an individual, grounded 120 V circuit with a 15 or 20 amp breaker for a dishwasher, and permit rules vary by province |
| Gas connection for a dryer or range | Licensed gas fitter | Technical Safety BC explains that a blocked gas dryer vent can leak exhaust that may contain carbon monoxide |
| Cutting a vent through a roof or wall | A qualified contractor | Water can get in if the roof or wall is not flashed properly |
| Soldering copper near a new appliance | Licensed plumber | Bosch warns that soldering heat can damage a dishwasher |
Appliance installers connect to what is already there. For a new line or circuit, mention it when you book so the right trade is arranged.
Before delivery day: a checklist for every appliance
- Measure the space and the path. Check the opening, the doorways, the stairs and any tight corners. Use the maker’s spec sheet for the exact size.
- Check the hookups. Look for the shut-off valves, the drain, the right outlet, the gas line or the outside vent, depending on the appliance.
- Read the manual’s requirements. Heights, clearances and hose lengths differ by brand and model.
- Decide about the old appliance. Removal and haul-away are often separate. Home Depot Canada, for example, charges an extra fee for haul-away.
- Replace the parts that age. New washer hoses, a new dryer duct and a new dishwasher inlet hose are small costs next to a leak or a fire.
- Know who will install. Home Depot Canada says it installs only appliances purchased there, so a unit bought elsewhere needs an independent installer.

Safety points that apply across appliances
- Vent dryers outside with metal duct. The City of Toronto’s dryer fire safety page advises rigid or flexible metal duct and warns that plastic or foil duct is more prone to kinking, sagging and crushing, which builds up lint. See dryer vent length and duct rules.
- Plan make-up air for large range hoods. Health Canada’s ventilation report says fans of roughly 200 to 400 CFM and up need a way to supply make-up air.
- Give a dishwasher drain a high loop or an air gap. It stops dirty sink water flowing back, and some codes require an air gap.
- Secure what can tip. A dishwasher that is not fixed to the counter or cabinets can tip forward when the door is open and a rack is loaded.
- Test before you leave. Run a short cycle and watch every connection for leaks.

How to compare appliance installation quotes
| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the price for a swap, and what happens if the hookups need work? | New work changes the price and the trade |
| Which hoses, ducts, kits and outlets are included? | Parts are the usual extra |
| Is the old appliance removed, and is there a fee? | Haul-away is often extra |
| Will they test the appliance before leaving? | A short cycle shows leaks and airflow problems |
| When do I pay? | With Pixl Canada you pay after the job |
DIY or hire an installer?
- DIY suits a like-for-like swap where every hookup is in place and in good condition, you have a helper and you can follow the manual.
- Hire an installer when the appliance is heavy or stacked, the hookups need work, a dryer or range is gas, or you want a leak-checked job and a second pair of hands.
- Call a licensed trade for new gas, plumbing or electrical work.

Frequently asked questions
How much does appliance installation cost in Canada?
It depends on the appliance. With Pixl Canada, a dishwasher is $180, a side-by-side washer and dryer is $110, a stacked pair is $150, an under-cabinet range hood is $140 and an over-the-range microwave is $160, before tax.
Do installation prices include the appliance?
No. They cover installation and the listed parts. The appliance is bought separately.
Can I install appliances myself?
A like-for-like swap is possible for many people. New gas, plumbing or electrical work needs a licensed trade.
Can the store that sold me the appliance install it?
Often, but check the terms. Home Depot Canada, for example, says it installs only appliances purchased there, and haul-away costs extra.
Do I need a plumber, an electrician or a gas fitter?
Only when the job adds a new water or drain line, a new circuit or a gas connection. Replacing an appliance that connects to what is already there does not need them.
Can I book several appliances in one visit?
Tell us everything you are installing when you book, such as a dishwasher, a range hood and a microwave, and we will confirm the total before we schedule the visit.
Pixl Canada prices are before tax and were checked in October 2026. Your total depends on your hookups, so confirm it before you book. Local codes vary by province.
