Security Camera Installation for Retail Stores

Pixl installs security cameras and CCTV systems for convenience stores, boutiques, pharmacies and other retail shops. We plan every camera view around the front door, the till, the stockroom and the loading door, send a written quote after a walkthrough, and you pay after the job.

CCTV

Which camera system suits a retail store?

Most stores use wired PoE (CCTV) IP cameras that record to an NVR in the back office, because one network cable carries power and video and recording does not depend on WiFi. Dome cameras are discreet inside, where a vandal cannot easily reach them, and bullet cameras are easy to aim at a door or lot and show customers that cameras are in use. A wide-angle view covers a room but shows less detail at a distance, so we add a second camera where you need faces.

Wired CCTV (DVR/NVR)

More stable, and ideal for long-term use or larger properties.

WiFi cameras

Easier to install, and good for smaller spaces or rentals.

Security camera installation cost

How much does retail security camera installation cost?

A store camera system is quoted after a walkthrough, because the price depends on how many positions you need, the cable routes and the recorder. A corner shop with four cameras and a department store floor are very different jobs, so we do not publish a package price. The quote is free and in writing, and you pay after the job. One or two WiFi cameras in a small shop start at $200 before tax.

WiFi camera installation

From $200 for 1 or 2 cameras, before tax. A good fit for condos, rentals and smaller homes.

Wired CCTV system (NVR/DVR)

Free custom quote. We price it for your property once we know the layout, the cable routes and the walls.

What changes the price of a business camera system:

  • Number of positions: front door, till, sales floor, stockroom, back door and storefront
  • Ceiling type and cable route to the back office, including drop ceilings and surface raceway
  • Lighting at the entrances and at night, which can decide the camera model
  • Recorder and storage for the number of days you want to keep
  • Whether you also want cameras covering the parking lot or storefront

Use our Retail store camera placement guide to mark each position on a floor plan before you ask for quotes, and our Business security camera quote checklist to compare them.

What a retail camera install includes

We mount each camera, run and hide the cable, power the cameras through PoE, set up the recorder in a locked spot, and connect remote viewing so the owner can check the store from a phone. We can supply the equipment or install cameras you already own.

Before we leave, we check every view after closing time, when glare and darkness show up, and walk you through playback and export. We work with Hikvision, Reolink, Dahua, Lorex and TP-Link Tapo.

Retail camera layouts by store type

The same six positions apply to most shops, but the priorities change with what you sell and how you take payment. These are the layouts we plan most often.

Convenience and corner stores

Front door, till, the cooler aisle and the back door. Cash and after-hours entry come first.

Boutiques and clothing stores

Entrance and till first. Keep cameras out of fitting rooms and staff change areas.

Pharmacies and small clinics

Counter, entrance and stock area, with strict limits on who can view footage near customers’ private conversations.

Electronics and high-value retail

Displays, cases and the stockroom door, with a second camera at the till for detail.

Shopping plaza units

Storefront, entrance and rear service door. Check the landlord’s rules before mounting outside your unit.

Where each retail camera goes

Walk the store from the front door to the back door and mark each point on a floor plan. Start with where losses and disputes happen, not with how many cameras fit the budget. Keep cameras out of washrooms, change rooms and similar areas, post a clear sign and tell staff in writing.

Front door, inside

See each person’s face as they enter.

Till or counter

The transaction area and the cash drawer.

Sales floor

Aisles and high-value displays, with corners and tall shelves covered.

Stockroom and back door

Inventory and deliveries, with good lighting.

Storefront and parking

Window break-ins and vehicle access on your own frontage.

2

Get a written quote

You get a written quote listing cameras, recorder, storage, cable work and tax, free and with no commitment.

Retail security camera installation: questions

It depends on the number of cameras, the cable routes, the recorder and storage, and how the building is built, so every business system is quoted after a walkthrough. The quote is free and in writing, and you pay after the job. One or two WiFi cameras in a small space start at $200, before tax.

It depends on the layout, not on a fixed number. A small shop usually starts with the front door, the till, the stockroom and the back or loading door, then adds the sales floor and the storefront. We mark each position on a floor plan during the walkthrough and quote only what you need.

Keep cameras out of washrooms, fitting rooms and staff change areas, and avoid break rooms unless there is a specific reason and staff are told. Do not aim a camera at a neighbour’s windows or doors. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada gives guidance on overt video surveillance.

Posting a clear sign at each entrance is good practice and part of the privacy guidance for cameras in public-facing businesses. See our guide on whether you need a camera sign in Canada.

Keep audio off unless you have taken legal advice. Recording conversations raises separate legal issues from recording video.

Yes. We set up remote viewing on your phone, tablet or computer, test live view and playback with you, and show you how to review footage before we leave.

You pay after the job is done, by card, e-transfer or cash. The written quote comes first, so there are no surprises.
